Doug Ghim Matches Course Record with 10-Under 60 at RSM Classic

Doug Ghim continued his strong performance as of late at the RSM Classic. He shot an incredible 10-under 60 on the Seaside course at Sea Island. This score not only propelled him to the tournament’s top position but tied the course record, showcasing Ghim’s skill and determination. He just recorded an incredible round, including seven birdies in the final ten holes. This achievement serves as a testament to his undeniable talent for closing with a bang.

The RSM Classic will be an important step for Ghim, a big one. He came into the tournament ranked No. 125 in the FedEx Cup standings. His goal is clear: he aims to break into the top 100 by the end of the season. Ghim acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, “I probably need to finish top 3. I don’t know exactly what the numbers are, but honestly, out here finishing third is almost just as hard as winning. So I’m just focused on playing solid golf and hopefully getting my chance to win.”

Andrew Novak was even bigger news on that first-round day, after the little-known pro carded a remarkable 9-under 61. His last competitive event was at the Tour Championship in late August. This tournament was his first playing as a father. His finish puts Novak right on the cut line — at No. 119 right now in the FedEx Cup standings.

Takumi Kanaya came into the week ranked No. 50 in the world. His challenges came on the closing holes of his round though where he bogeyed his last two to come in at 3-under or 68. His play is as much an indicator of the difficulty of that course and the high-stakes, cutthroat nature of that particular tournament.

Johnny Keefer earned his tour card by finishing No. 1 on the Korn Ferry Tour this season. Consequently, that left him coming into this week ranked No. 99. What he learned from being on that tour may be invaluable as he further learns and develops how to best move his career forward.

Veteran golfer Davis Love III shot a steady 71, while Ben Griffin, who recently teamed with Novak to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, is in contention this week.

Ghim’s 61, record-tying performance, might be even more so. Novak’s impressive return really emphasizes how competitive the RSM Classic has become. With players battling for their place in the FedEx Cup, every round counts more than the last.

Ghim expressed his satisfaction with his round but remained humble about his accomplishments. “I thought I made it halfway there and at the end of the day that’s all I really can do. Just pleased to just have a chance really.”
