Dante Exum to Miss Entire Season Due to Knee Complications

Dante Exum, guard for the Dallas Mavericks, will sit out the full 2023-2024 NBA season. He is currently recovering from complications after an emergency right knee surgery. The Dallas Mavericks subsequently announced that Exum will undergo a second procedure on his long-ailing joint. As he explained, his career has been reeling from this injury for almost three years now. This sad turn of events follows him never being cleared to practice after a knee surgery this past summer.

The Mavericks were really looking forward to having Exum this year. They proved that confidence when they re-signed him in the offseason to a one-year, $3.3 million deal. During his final two seasons with the club, Exum provided glimpses of why he was such a coveted asset. He posted 8.0 points and 2.8 assists per game over 75 contests. His contributions were significant despite being marred by injuries that have hindered his performance throughout his career.

Exum’s inability to stay healthy has put his long-term viability in the league back into question. Not withstanding his clear talent and potential, these issues have conspired to stunt his growth and scarce his minutes. The most recent news regarding his health had angered both the organization and fan base alike. Naturally, they were hoping to see him make an impact this season.

The Mavericks now turn to the tall task of replacing the production Exum provided in his short stint. His special skill set and experience would have added a new dimension to their roster, especially at the guard position. As Smith and Moore work through this challenge, the team should consider other avenues to improve their competitiveness heading into 2023.
