The English Under-21 squad showed their depth and skill on the international stage. In doing so, they pulled off a thunderous 4-0 win over Slovakia’s U21 team in Presov. This brilliant victory is England U21’s fifth straight game of keeping a clean sheet. It also launches them to first place in their qualifying group for the European Under-21 Championships.

As it turned out, the game played out on a chilly but clear night, with England taking firm command from the get-go. Jamie Gittens was once again the catalyst, teeing up the opening goal in the 18th minute. Ethan Nwaneri took full advantage of this golden chance, putting the ball past the Dutch keeper to hand his side an important lead. The team’s aggressive offensive approach was cemented by an all-around great performance from various players for the entirety of the contest.

In a one-on-one challenge Tommy Setford, England’s goalkeeper, pulled off a remarkable save against Slovakia’s Jakub Pira. His inexplicable execution and ubiquitous performance allowing the Lionesses to remain on their shut out. As the match continued, Brooke Norton-Cuffey’s powerful run led to a second goal for England, ensuring their control was even more established.

As the match neared its end, England were able to further extend their score line. Mubama finished three minutes from time to underlie the team’s never-say-die attitude to netting goals. Rico Lewis stamped his authority on this match by finding King with the assist, and King was able to convert.

Despite Slovakia’s efforts, including attempts from Matej Riznic and Timotej Hranica that nearly equalized, they struggled to penetrate England’s solid defense. Samuel Gidi’s attempt with a floated lob from 40 yards was off-target, while Adam Hrdina did well to tip Sydie Peck’s shot onto the post before recovering the rebound.

With this victory, England U21 jumped to the top of their group, breaking Slovakia’s long-held lead contested with England. They currently sit two points clear and have a game in hand as well. Midway through the campaign is a very positive place to find the fledgling team. They are creating tremendous momentum and confidence with each step they take.
