Mark Wood produced an awesome speedball workout in the nets in Perth on Tuesday. As such, his dominance has raised expectations for his inclusion in the coming Ashes series. Wood was able to get a scan on Saturday morning, which showed nothing to prevent him from playing. His remarkable showing in the nets has injected new energy into England’s hopes as they prepare for their opening Test against Australia.
Wood has had a long absence period from Test cricket, with the bowler last appearing in August 2024 after suffering significant injuries. Prior to experiencing tightness in his left hamstring, he had bowled just eight overs in two spells during the tour match. As a precaution, he left the field during the afternoon session. This is a sign of England’s prudence in a continued effort to manage his heavy workload. His team had highly scripted every aspect of his bowling workload. With his chequered injury history in mind – knee surgery earlier this year among it – they undervalued him.
Even having missed a huge chunk of last season, Wood’s dynamism in his first full practice since the injury was impressive. Jamie Smith, who watched the practice, had a very positive assessment of Wood’s performance.
“He was absolutely rapid today. I can tell you that first hand.” – Jamie Smith
Smith highlighted the difficulties that Wood presents even in practice situations, saying,
“He’s definitely one to avoid on the netting list. He was near enough full tilt, so it’s good signs for us.” – Jamie Smith
Wood’s inclusion in the squad for England’s only warm-up game against England Lions at Lilac Hill last week demonstrated the team’s confidence in his recovery, albeit with an understanding that there is inherent risk due to his past injuries. He is now the fourth-fastest bowler in the history of Test cricket for England. His possible return would add to the already impressive bowling attack.
Even fellow wicketkeeper Alex Carey, from the other side of the world, understood Wood’s predicament. He underlined the importance of balancing his workload ahead of their preparations for the Ashes series. He stated,
“The thing for Pat is the workload and getting enough overs in his legs, making sure there are no other injuries from bowling.” – Alex Carey
Canterbury’s seamer for all occasions Carey sounded positive about the potential of Wood being primed for the Test series, saying,
“It’s looking like he’s preparing really well. It would be great to see him back playing soon.” – Alex Carey
The England team looks ahead to the Ashes. Wood’s return could prove pivotal to their plans if they face Australia. His ability to bowl at 140km/h+ is most important. Further, this is compounded by the fact that he has not played a Test match since August 2024. These next few matches provide a huge opportunity for Wood to fight his way back into a regular first team spot. They give him a space to control his fitness and turn out strong and do meaningful work.
