Wembanyama to Miss Several Weeks Due to Calf Injury

San Antonio Spurs’ rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama will miss at least a few weeks with a calf strain. That was clear when the 21-year-old forward was seen in the locker room cutting up after Sunday’s victory. When wearing a sleeve on his left calf, he raised alarms over his health. Even with the right foot injury, Wembanyama did not appear to be hindered in any way as he played against the Jazz.

Now Wembanyama’s lighting it up! He recently completed his third consecutive game, recording 25 or more points and 10 or more rebounds. This streak ties the longest of his career, a testament to his ongoing evolution as a player and continuing force on the court. Currently, he is averaging a career-high 26.2 points per game, 12.9 rebounds, and 4.0 assists, while leading the league in blocks, averaging 3.6 per game.

Wembanyama was listed as questionable earlier on Sunday with left calf tightness. Just hours before the tip-off of the Spurs’ eventual victory over the Sacramento Kings, he was officially ruled out. In his last matchup vs the Golden State Warriors, the third of the season, he was spectacular for 38 minutes. He had 12 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks, leading his team with 26 points as well.

It appears the Spurs’ coaching staff is in no means treating this as a cakewalk. “Obviously, we’ve seen around this league recently, the calf-tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly,” noted Spurs coach Mitch Johnson. He continued, “Don’t want to rush it there,” further showing the Spurs’ desire to be extremely cautious in how they handle Wembanyama’s first recovery.

Victor Wembanyama is about to play his third game in the NBA. His performance has been fundamental to the development of San Antonio’s strategy. Luke Kornet was one of the team’s specific free agency targets. They need him to serve as their frontcourt anchor when Wembanyama is off the floor.
