Derrick Jones Jr, a forward for the Los Angeles Clippers, suffered an apparent knee injury during a game against the Boston Celtics on Sunday. This was a major incident. It occurred in Q2 of this year. He ran into Celtics guard Jaylen Brown while pursuing a loose ball. Jones Jr. clutched his right knee immediately following the collision. He was subsequently assisted off the field toward the locker room, causing fears to mount over the significance of his potential injury.
The crash transpired while both players were battling for the ball. Brown’s arm hit Jones Jr’s leg, which caused a quick reaction from the Clippers’ forward. He could barely put weight on his injured leg as he walked out of the court. Alarmed, nearby medical staff rushed in and quickly helped him to safety off the floor. The Clippers were put to the test once again in yet another nail biter. They lost in the end to the eventual champion Celtics 121-118.
For both Jone Jr. has been a dependable doghouse catalyst for the Clippers throughout this season. Case in point: he’s begun all 13 games and is up to 10.9 ppg on the year. The 28-year-old has been the straw that stirs the drink for the squad. His contributions have proven vital as they’ve faced treacherous early season surprises and pitfalls.
After the game, his concerned teammate James Harden talked about what it was like to see Jones Jr go down with an injury. He remarked, “It’s like one after the next. You just try to continue to keep your head on straight, focus on what you can control and just go out there and come away with wins. Hopefully guys will start coming back sooner than later.” Harden put on a compelling show, scoring 32 of his 37 points in the second half. It was a tremendous battle for him to gather that group and ignite the miracle comeback.
The impact resulted in Brown being called for a foul, but the immediate attention turned to Jones Jr’s welfare. For the Clippers’ sake, let’s hope it’s great news with an optimistic return timeline provided. It has already been an extremely difficult season for the franchise.
