Azeez Al-Shaair, a prominent linebacker for the Houston Texans, has emerged as a key figure both on and off the field. Leading the team with 59 tackles, Al-Shaair’s physical style of play has earned him recognition, but it has resulted in occasional fines and penalties. His career would take a sudden turn following a targeting hit on quarterback Trevor Lawrence. That incident eventually resulted in a three-game suspension and remains one of the defining chapters in his development.
Even after the fallout from this incident, Al-Shaair is still making an impact on the field as he’s been integral in the Texans’ stingy defensive unit. During his tenure, the club has given up the fewest points and yards in the league. This overwhelming performance really underscores just how impactful a player he was. More than those numbers, it’s Al-Shaair’s personality that strikes a chord inside the building. DeMeco Ryans, the Texans’ head coach, praises Al-Shaair as “the glue” and “the heartbeat” of the team, emphasizing his importance in maintaining team cohesion.
Al-Shaair’s path to the NFL hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing. Even after the hit on Lawrence, Jerry endured intense media criticism and self-examination. It was big of him to personally apologize to Lawrence for what happened. This was a true show of sportsmanship and accountability from him. “I mean, no excuse, but I’m really sorry for the way that happened,” Al-Shaair said as he turned to Trevor. He clearly had a deep commitment to repairing any damage done at that time.
Al-Shaair’s impact is felt outside of his play on the field. As a captain, he’s done a great job of creating a positive energy and spirit in the locker room. His defensive coordinator and longtime mentor, Matt Burke, adds that he’s just a “really good dude” who has an uncommon level of empathy for other people. This trait resonates not only with teammates but with opponents, as Al-Shaair is known for helping players off the ground and acknowledging their efforts.
Al-Shaair’s impact is most noticeable with the younger players. His approachability and eagerness to lift his teammates up have turned him into a mentor figure. His teammate Henry To’oTo’o, also a linebacker, put it like this. On a personal level, he’s always been there for me during the good times and the bad. When he tells you he loves you, that’s it—he loves you. It’s these kind of connections that make you understand how much Al-Shaair loves his teammates. Ryans adds that this dedication is a testament to Al-Shaair’s continued status as one of the league’s coolest dudes.
The violent nature of football has sometimes put the focus on Al-Shaair’s playing style. In light of past comments about his hits, he reflects on how he has tried to distance himself from social media discussions surrounding his reputation. “I’ve been trying really hard to just avoid social media in general,” he said. He understood the deep influence of optics certainly after all the damage done last year.
While not playing in the NFL for long, Al-Shaair credits a lot of his character to his upbringing and individual personal experiences. “For me, I got my personality from my mom,” he said. His unique capacity for empathy comes from having had to overcome his own challenges and tribulations during his own lifelong journey. He explains, “Whether it’s you doing your job or me doing my job, we’re both still just humans. I don’t want to be that guy either—I’m trying to be conscious of everyone around me. I just can’t tell you what somebody’s going through.”
Ryans continues to elaborate on Al-Shaair’s important place in the fiber of the organization. He holds this whole thing together […] Without him, I really don’t know where we would be,” Ryans said. His appreciation for Al-Shaair goes beyond his performance on the field. It encompasses the values he represents within the team dynamic.
As the Texans move through the rest of their season with hopes of glory, Al-Shaair is a rock leading on and off the field. His combination of toughness and tenderness serves as a model for young athletes. More than that, it speaks to anyone who is trying to fight the odds and be themselves at the same time.
