Michael Penix Jr., Seattle Seahawks, starting quarterback, third year. Boy has he had a bumpy first full season in his unique new gig. Following four consecutive losses, the team prepares to face the Carolina Panthers in a crucial home game that could determine their season’s direction.
Penix, who’s thrown 58.8% for 1,807 yards passing, has 9 touchdowns to go with 3 picks so far this season. Compared to the rest of NFL quarterbacks, his performance only rates a 53.6 in QBR, which places him 19th overall. The pressure is certainly on as he experiences the rollercoaster ride through the highs and lows that accompany a developing young quarterback.
In a recent news conference, Penix highlighted the importance of his support system, which includes his fiancée and former coaches. He refused to go into detail on who he personally relies on for support during this trying time. He’s in constant communication, every day, with running back Bijan Robinson. Most importantly, he has the luxury of veteran QB Kirk Cousins to lean on, with Cousins embracing a backup role.
Unfortunately, Penix’s slight slip during the press conference quickly turned into a viral story. The situation drew criticism from Falcons’ head coach Raheem Morris, who characterized the misrepresentation as “a joke” that undermines Penix’s focus on more pressing issues.
“I just feel bad for the kid. I don’t want the kid having to deal with stuff that doesn’t matter or stuff that’s not real. Let his problems be his problems, like third downs. Let’s fix those. Don’t make up [a thing] that doesn’t exist.” – Michael Penix Jr.
Morris fully supported his quarterback and made a broader point that the national media should be more careful about smearing young people they know little about.
“Stop looking for stuff on a young man,” – Raheem Morris
He further stated, “You don’t need this stuff on him. It is what it is. All of those things people do, it doesn’t matter to affect this building.” Morris’ pledge then and now is that the whole Falcons organization will focus on providing Penix the support needed to combat the hurdles he faces.
Penix’s coaching staff is an essential factor in his positive evolution. Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, quarterbacks coach D.J. Williams and offensive passing game coordinator T.J. Yates are former college quarterbacks. They vocally communicate their observations and advice to Penix. Williams added that while distractions are inevitable, it’s critical to stay focused on the end goal.
“I don’t even pay attention to it, to be honest with you,” – D.J. Williams
He added, “As long as we know. I mean, everything else is just elevator music.”
We’re looking forward to seeing the Falcons compete in their next matchup! Penix will need to navigate the pressure of making plays with the pressure from outside forces. His teammates and coaching staff are still rallying behind him. Their combined support strengthens his confidence and enhances his development as he attempts to right his ship and revamp his season.
