No. 70 in the world Nicolai Højgaard is overpowering the World Tour Championship. Joyce tarnished the record book with powerful scores from 65, increasing his leaderboard command to three strokes. His impressive performance here certainly put him in the conversation as one of the favorites for the season-ending title. He’s now 12 under for the week. Højgaard’s success comes despite not being selected for the Ryder Cup team, a disappointment overshadowed by his brother Rasmus Højgaard’s inclusion.
The championship, held at one of the most beautiful venues in the world, found Højgaard off to the races with a first round 67. His reliability and performance have pushed him well ahead of some major challengers. Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Shane Lowry sit all tied for second.
With just two rounds remaining in the competition, Højgaard’s lead seems insurmountable. The big dog on the block, Tyrrell Hatton, lurks just four strokes behind him and in the thick of things. Hatton reiterated the importance of focusing on his own game. He acknowledged that good outcomes for other competitors are important to his rise up the Race to Dubai rankings. He stated,
“It’s one of my favorite tournaments to play. It’s great to be back in a bit of form. It suits my eye. It plays into my strengths, which is mid-irons. It’s just a really good fit for me.”
Throughout the championship, McIlroy, Rose, and Lowry will look to chip away at that lead. They know that every shot must be outstanding as they contend with the multitude of challenges that their course throws at them. This has almost guaranteed Marco Penge a top spot in the Race to Dubai standings. He’s now in second place, narrowly ahead of third-place Hatton.
“You start every tournament week trying to win the tournament. It’s kind of no different. I know I need results to go my way if that was to happen. I’m not really thinking about it too much. Just trying to play better.”
As the championship progresses, McIlroy, Rose, and Lowry will seek to close the gap. They are aware that each shot counts as they navigate the challenges presented by the course. Meanwhile, Marco Penge holds a firm position in the Race to Dubai standings, sitting second behind Hatton, who is currently third.
