Brock Purdy’s Path to Recovery Gains Momentum Ahead of Arizona Clash

Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers is ahead of the curve in recovering from his Tommy John surgery. On Wednesday, he was a participant in limited practice for the fourth straight week. Purdy is now out with a right toe injury. He further injured this degenerative condition during a Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He lost the injury in Week 1 while matching up against the Seattle Seahawks. As a result, he lost two games before rejoining his team with a comeback performance against Jacksonville.

The 49ers have taken a cautious approach with Purdy, whose franchise-record $265 million contract underscores the team’s investment in him as their starting quarterback. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan said publicly he had no doubts that Purdy would return to his starting job once he’s healed enough to do so.

During practice this week, Purdy demonstrated more engagement in individual drills compared to previous weeks, indicating a positive trajectory in his recovery. Shanahan said what he saw this week will be key in determining just how close Purdy is to getting back to his pre-injury level.

“We’ve just got to put limited if it’s not exactly how it normally is,” – Kyle Shanahan

His usual throwing velocity, his usual movement—Those were the two biggest indicators to me that Purdy was really ready. From last week till this week, I think every week it’s gone better,” said Kyle Shanahan, emphasizing that Purdy is getting healthy day by day. The coach remains optimistic about Purdy’s return, stating, “I know when Brock comes back, he’ll play the same way he always has, like a very high-level quarterback.”

To make his return in time for the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals, Purdy must complete all three practices this week without any setbacks. His absence from the field is particularly egregious. Still, Mac Jones has recently emerged, providing a steadying presence at the controls for Gophers football during an otherwise difficult fall.

Purdy’s determination to get back to playing at a high level is clear as he goes through this recovery process. The 49ers organization is still keeping a close eye on his progress, making sure that health comes first and the long-term performance is of utmost importance.
