The Dallas Cowboys family is mourning the tragic loss of Marshawn Kneeland. The former Tulane star had been one of the league’s promising second-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. Kneeland’s young life was tragically snuffed out after an incident that began with an officer-involved pursuit of the driver that struck him last Thursday morning. He was found dead in the nearby woods from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leaving his vehicle on foot, authorities said.
The incident began when police chased Kneeland around 12:30 a.m. After he abandoned his vehicle, law enforcement later found him hiding under a dumpster. The current shock of his death has shocked through the Cowboys’ community. His teammates and staff are mourning and remembering their favorite stories they shared with the young athlete.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, the Cowboys have shared their plans to pay tribute to Kneeland during their next few home games. The team will honor him by wearing unique decals on the back of their helmets all season. They’ll be donning special commemorative T-shirts in warmups for their game on October 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders. They’ll strap them on again before running against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 23. This match will be their first return to AT&T Stadium since Kneeland’s death. It’s a bittersweet moment in time for the organization and its loyal supporters alike.
Micah Parsons, star linebacker for the Cowboys’ defense, lamented. In addition to commemorating Johnson’s life and contributions, Hughes shared his thoughts on their time together as teammates. Like Sanchez, he said that Kneeland’s death has drastically shaken up the team culture.
Here’s what the Cowboys’ executive vice president Stephen Jones had to say recently on the ironic situation. He highlighted how it has shifted mindsets across the department.
“Certainly, it puts everything into perspective,” – Stephen Jones
In a separate interview, he continued to describe the emotional impact of the announcement, saying that news broke the heart of the entire team.
“Anytime you get news like that, your heart just, obviously, it’s like a hole going through it, and you’re just heartbroken,” – Stephen Jones
That was the scene at The Star on Monday, as organizers welcomed the Cowboys back for the first time since Kneeland’s death. For all who had known him, this became a potent moment for reflection and remembrance. His team is determined to carry on and honor his legacy. They will continue to do so on and off the field as they face this challenging period.
