Bulls’ Josh Giddey to Miss Monday’s Game Against Spurs

Chicago Bulls rising star Josh Giddey has been ruled out for Monday night’s game. He will miss the game against the San Antonio Spurs due to a sprained right ankle. Giddey picked up the injury late in the third quarter of Saturday’s loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He slipped while trying a crossover dribble.

Despite returning to the game against the Cavaliers, he was clearly struggling. He finished 0-for-6 from the field, but more importantly, he appeared to limp or protect his ankle on critical possessions. After the game, he showed very little evidence of swelling. Though he had been dealing with the injury for some time, after receiving treatment on Sunday he said he felt slightly limited during Monday’s shootaround.

Following the news of the injury, coach Billy Donovan gave an update on Giddey’s condition and said the team is treating him as day-to-day. To soothe Thunder fans, he went on to clarify that Giddey’s injury shouldn’t be long-term.

“We don’t feel like it’s anything too severe with his ankle,” – Billy Donovan

The Bulls face the San Antonio Spurs in their last home game. From there, they’ll head out on a four-game NFL-style road trip, beginning Wednesday night in Detroit. Giddey’s status for that game remains uncertain.

This season, Giddey has been an absolute killer against the Bulls. He’s a dang good playmaker, averaging 21.4 points, 9.6 rebounds and 9.3 assists per game on 46% shooting from the field and 39% shooting from deep. His absence will be sorely missed as the squad looks to head into their third consecutive matchup against a ranked opponent.

Donovan stressed that they will err on the side of caution with Giddey’s health, suggesting that they won’t push him back out there.

“He didn’t have really much swelling after the game [Saturday]. He got some [treatment] yesterday and was just a little bit uncomfortable today at shootaround.” – Billy Donovan
