Hearts were on the end of a disastrous performance against Dundee United on Saturday as they lost out on precious points in their chase of Premership title. Hearts began the day with a healthy nine-point cushion atop the second-tier league. They were unable to convert that benefit into a win, drawing the contest 1-1 at Tynecastle Park.
It was a surprise start to the match for Hearts. Just five minutes later, Zac Sapsford slipped in behind the defense and smartly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow. The attempt was disallowed for offside, preventing Dundee United taking an early lead.
In that first half, Hearts opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a goal from Alexandros Kyziridis. His shot hit the woodwork and deflected off United’s shot stopper, Yevheni Kucherenko. The ball had sailed across the line, allowing Hearts to go up 2-1! The hosts looked like holding onto their advantage until the dying minutes of the opening period.
Dundee United’s Resilience Shines
Dundee United’s equaliser just before halftime was a reminder of their quality, obviously fired up by Tannadice’s atmosphere. Just as first half stoppage time was approaching, Stephenson found space at the back post. Unchallenged, he launched himself to connect with Amar Fatah’s corner with a thumping header from eight yards to double the lead. Although Alexander Schwolow managed to get a hand on the ball, he was unable to stop it from rolling over the line.
The draw means Dundee United have now gone eight competitive league matches without defeat. With 30 points after 12 matches, they are currently ranked seventh of the climbing Premiership.
“It was a really good all-round performance.” – Jim Goodwin
After the break, Hearts found it hard to get back on top of the game. They had a multitude of chances to break through Dundee United’s back four. They could not find the equalizer again. Hearts were denied on a hugely frustrating day as two late goals were ruled out for offside. This new wrinkle proved an even greater complication and barrier to their victory.
Hearts Struggle in Second Half
The result cuts Hearts’ lead at the top of the Premiership table to a mere seven points. Even still, they’ve drawn two of their last three, leading to doubts about their grasping on league form. Derek McInnes, reflecting on the match, stated,
Hearts will need to put the disappointment of this defeat behind them but must be more ruthless in attack come their next fixture. Dundee United can only hope to carry forward this momentum as they extend their impressive unbeaten streak in league play.
“I thought we didn’t deserve any more than the point we got.” – Derek McInnes
As Hearts regroup from this setback, they must address their attacking woes ahead of their next fixture. Dundee United will look to build on this momentum as they continue their unbeaten run in the league.
