Ben Griffin triumphed at the World Wide Technology Championship, solidifying his position with a remarkable third PGA Tour title of the season. The event was held at El Cardonal, in Diamante—Mexico. Griffin produced an unusually strong final round to the tune of a 9-under 63, winning the event by two strokes over his closest competitors.
Griffin’s round was punctuated by a streak of long, beautiful birdie putts. He sank a 40-foot putt on the par-3 11th, followed by a 25-foot putt on the 12th hole and another 25-footer on the par-3 16th. These crucial shots reflected his confidence and skill, helping him avoid the mistakes that hindered challengers Garrick Higgo and Carson Young throughout the final round.
Even with a brief hiccup featuring a three-putt bogey on the fifth hole, Griffin bounced back nicely. He carded birdies on each of the four par-3 holes in the tournament. This remarkable achievement was a true testament to his gifted talent for performing in high-stakes situations. He capped his victory with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 18th, punctuating his impressive back nine charge.
With this win, Griffin tied his best ranking ever, No. 8 in the FedEx Cup. In the process, he jumped to No. 9 in the world rankings. His current FedEx Cup ranking stands at No. 52, following a tie for seventh in his previous four starts during the FedEx Cup Fall season. His impressive debut has already given him full card for next year. That secures his spot in high-profile tournaments such as Pebble Beach and Riviera to start next season.
Reflecting on his performance, Griffin stated, “After making a few birdies early, I kind of pushed myself a little bit harder than the past few weeks when I was in contention to kind of keep the pedal down.” Perhaps because of that, his determination was evident as he approached the course’s formidable obstacles. On the par-5 13th, an unfortunate mistake with his second shot caused it to ricochet left into a deep bank.
As Griffin acknowledged, his putting was arguably the most pivotal aspect of his back nine. Luckily, the putter was warming up, and I was hitting plenty of putts on the back nine. It was exhilarating to experience the tension in the final furlong attempting to hold everything at bay. So it was good to knock a few down the stretch,” he said.
Along with all the golfing success this year, Griffin is about to become a husband, as he’s scheduled to marry Dana Myeroff next month. He expressed excitement over his accomplishments in 2023, remarking, “Crazy, three wins and getting married in the same year, hard to beat.”
Ben Griffin prepares for life on the PGA Tour and life as a married man. The 20-year-old American has since proven himself to be a serious contender each week on the PGA Tour. His recent victory not only enhances his standing in professional golf but reflects his dedication and resilience throughout the season.
