It’s a big Week 10 matchup, and the Houston Texans are relying on Davis Mills to get the job done. They are prepared to face off against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This decision comes after starter C.J. Stroud being ruled out with a concussion. So far this year, Mills has served as the No. 2 quarterback behind Stroud. Now, he returns to a starting role in which he’s built a strong resume.
Mills has a ton of experience for the position under his belt, having played in 25 games with 12 starts in his collegiate career. During this period, he has thrown for 5,802 yards, 33 TDs and 25 picks. His former long stint as a starter will come in especially handy here. The Texans look to continue their positive trend this season.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans is riding with Mills, as well. He’s confident that Mills can meet the moment at this pivotal time. He noted, “If something happens to your starter, [if] you don’t have guys behind him who can go out and perform and keep the team moving, then, most of the time, your season is just done.” Ryans says Mills’ experience will be a boon as he works to guide the program through whatever challenges lie ahead.
Mills was the primary starter under center for the Texans. All of that was upended when they selected Stroud with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Even with this change, Mills’ work ethic has been second to none, and his teammates have definitely taken notice of that. Will Anderson Jr., a fellow Texan, remarked on Mills’ preparation, stating, “Davis is doing a really good job preparing.”
This season, Mills has really shined during training camp. Anderson Jr. had no doubt that it was the best camp he’d ever witnessed since Mills came to town. He spoke of Mills’ development and his readiness to take on this opportunity. Ryans reiterated these praises, commending Mills for his dedication and thorough preparation.
Looking back on his journey, Mills admitted that the challenges in his rearview mirror have only heightened his desperation. He stated, “I think I’ve worked really hard to prove to those guys that I can go out there and be successful day in and day out.” This introspection has informed what he’s done as he prepares for this Sunday’s game.
The Texans rewarded Mills with a $7 million contract extension in 2021, recognizing his potential and contributions to the team. As he steps into this starting role against Jacksonville, it is clear that he is motivated to showcase his skills and lead his team effectively.
