Matti Schmid, a 27-year-old golfer from Germany, has surprised everyone by taking the lead at the WWT Championship. It was his impressive performance on Friday that sent him to the top. Schmid went on to shoot a blistering 9-under par 63, giving him a two-day total of 17-under 127. He’s one shot ahead of the field as he heads into the weekend. This important time is key to his hopes for professional success in the game.
Throughout the championship, Schmid proved to be an unstoppable force on the course. The Californian achieved, by far, the most impressive run with a 6-under par over the course of six holes. His round included a dazzling 30-foot eagle putt, which amounted to a big part of his score. This performance proved a watershed moment in Schmid’s career. His goal beyond that is to get in the top 100 in the FedEx Cup standings. At present, he sits just out of this prized standing, with this event crucial to his future.
Schmid further developed his game at the University of Louisville, competing on their college golf team. Following college, that was when he really took the leap into professional golf. From the very beginning, he proved to be incredibly talented. Now, holding a card to the European tour next year, he is focused on keeping his PGA Tour card for next season.
After going behind for a short time in the tournament, Schmid was able to regain his lead and doesn’t want to lose that momentum again. He’d indicated prior to the tournament that he was hopeful for a big weekend here to improve his position in the FedEx Cup.
“We all know how big those are and the added points you can earn in those, and also I want to play the best courses against the best players,” – Matti Schmid
As he quickly focuses on the last rounds, each stroke is critical for Schmid. His recent good form adds to his confidence. It further solidifies his place as a championship frontrunner. The weight of that burden is heavy, but through it all Schmid never lost sight of his objectives nor his commitment to leaving his imprint on professional golf.
