Crystal Palace triumphed over AZ Alkmaar with a 3-1 victory in the Europa Conference League match held on Thursday evening. The win was the team’s third win in a row, shooting them into ninth place in the league phase standings. The match featured some outstanding performances from players all over the pitch, not least Ismaila Sarr, whose clinical display lifted his side to glory.
Maxence Lacroix got Crystal Palace off to dream start in the final, scoring with just three minutes on the clock. His spectacular goal ignited the tempo of the match and awoke a sleepy home crowd. Soon after, Sarr completed the action as he tallied another goal – his eighth in all competitions this season. Sarr to thank in particular for this wonderful and vital contribution. He took full advantage after a few bouts of head tennis, after a floated free-kick by Yeremy Pino.
The game had the intrigue of a dramatic twist as Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty was later saved by AZ Alkmaar’s keeper, Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro. Mateta quickly redeemed himself by delivering an exquisite pass that allowed Sarr to score his goal, demonstrating his playmaking capabilities despite the earlier miss.
AZ Alkmaar Responds
In a spirited response, AZ Alkmaar found the back of the net through Sven Mijnans, who struck a deflected shot past Crystal Palace’s goalkeeper, Dean Henderson. This goal was a lightning strike as AZ had caught Palace on the counter, momentarily lifting a possible comeback from the dead. Even so, the hosts stayed calm and kept attacking, finding the insurance goal needed to wrap up their victory.
Even with that early setback, Crystal Palace showed their persistence and tactical discipline all game long. Manager Oliver Glasner heaped the same praise on their opponent AZ Alkmaar post-game, recognizing the tough test they offered.
“It was a tough game, but a very good result and performance. Maybe not on top, but it was also really OK.” – Oliver Glasner
This impressive and hard-focused victory increases Crystal Palace’s prospects greatly in the Conference League. It further demonstrates that their recent form is not a fluke.
Players Shine
Lacroix was elated to help the team win and do something she couldn’t take all the credit for doing. He underscored what the win meant for their fans. His ambition and hunger to return performance on the pitch speaks to his character, commitment to the club and its fans, and desire to succeed.
“We are really happy to give this win to the fans. Everyone is happy.” – Maxence Lacroix
In doing so, Sarr’s performance only served to further underline the developing impact he’s had within the squad this season. With eight goals this season, he has become a difference maker for all of 2015-16 with the Eagles. His movement to find space and create opportunities has given him a chance to be indispensable in their attacking formation.
Looking Ahead
Realistically, Crystal Palace has taken positive steps, playing well in the Europa Conference League. For now, though, their attention will be on carrying this momentum into their next few matches. The team’s cohesive play, coupled with individual brilliance from players like Sarr and Lacroix, could help them make significant strides in the league.
That confidence-boosting victory over AZ Alkmaar was a boost to morale in the squad. Beyond that though, it cements their status as a competitive power on the European football landscape. With new leadership under Oliver Glasner, the Eagles will be looking to build on their record performance. They still hope to punch a ticket into the tournament’s knockout stages.
