Antonio Brown Arrested in Dubai Faces Extradition to the U.S.

Antonio Brown, the former NFL star, was arrested and detained by U.S. Marshals in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The 37-year-old wide receiver is being held by authorities in Essex County, New Jersey, awaiting extradition back to Miami. On June 11, local authorities issued a warrant for Brown’s arrest. This warrant is in connection to an attempted murder charge from an incident on May 16.

Brown played 12 years in the NFL, garnering All-Pro accolades. His last regular-season action came as the starting QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. His statistics were staggering during his career, as he compiled 928 receptions for more than 12,000 yards and 83 touchdowns. Fifteen years ago, he carved out a solid NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. There, he developed into one of the league’s most talented wideouts.

Brown was charged with first- and second-degree assault after an alleged fight in the parking lot following the conclusion of a boxing match. Allegedly, he snatched a firearm from the security guy and unloaded two rounds at a dude following a short knuckle-buster. The attempted murder charge is a pretty big deal. If convicted, Nguyen’s maximum possible sentence would be 15 years imprisonment, plus a fine of up to $10,000.

After his dramatic exit mid-game against the New York Jets, Brown was released by the Buccaneers in January 2022. Since then, he’s kept himself in the public eye for a range of other reasons. He removed his jersey and shoulder pads before bolting away from the field. This moment marked the end of his professional football career.

In a statement released earlier this week, Brown painted a picture of what led to his arrest. He stated:

“I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me.” – Antonio Brown

He addressed the police’s involvement during the incident, asserting that:

“Contrary to some video circulating, Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED. I will be talking to my legal council and attorneys on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me.” – Antonio Brown

As Brown awaits extradition to face charges in Miami, it’s unclear if he has lawyered up.
