Karl-Anthony Towns had a monster game against his old team, the Minnesota Timberwolves. This exciting rivalry injected a lot of energy into Madison Square Garden. This season, Towns joins former New York Knicks player. This was his second game against the Timberwolves since his mid-season trade. The Knicks took control early and cruised to an impressive 137-114 victory. It was a special night for the home team, but an even more special one for the home debutant Towns.
Standing at an impressive 7 feet tall, Towns established himself as a force on the court. In not even half a game’s worth of play (31 minutes), he stuffed the boxscore with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. His versatility showed as he controlled the game on both sides of the court. He pulled off all kinds of hype-inducing highlights against his old teammates like this nasty backing down of Anthony Edwards into a dunk directly over his head.
Once the game started, Towns showed his familiarity with former teammates. He remarked on the unique experience of seeing them again, stating, “It’s always great when you see your brothers.” In this scenario, Towns gets traded to the Knicks for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. He remains very much in touch with his former club, staying close to players such as Rudy Gobert, with whom he developed a close relationship.
In his post-game presser, Towns shared his thoughts on the change from a Timberwolf to wearing the Knicks colors. He expressed mixed feelings about the change, saying, “I feel more like a Knick now after everything we went through last year, but it’s weird to see that Wolves jersey — especially the fire black one — and not see ‘Towns’ on the back of it.” His emotional attachment to his old team poured out. He frequently called them “we,” demonstrating his complete devotion.
Towns had some praise for the adaptation to the Knicks’ physicality. He noted that many plays that were once called for him are now directed towards Naz Reid, signifying a shift in team dynamics since his departure from Minnesota.
The game itself showcased Towns’ brilliance as he surprised Gobert in one of the top plays of the night. While celebrating his performance, he acknowledged the challenges posed by his former teammates, stating humorously about Edwards, “I didn’t jump, though. Yeah, he backed me down. He’s strong as hell.”
