During that three-day event, McIlroy—playing for the European team captained by Luke Donald—was often in a decidedly unfriendly environment. Instead, this adversity strengthened the team’s determination and propelled them to victory.
The Ryder Cup was a wonderful advertisement for the sport. It included such a competitive rivalry that Europe took a 12-5 lead into the final session. Led by U.S. captain Keegan Bradley, the U.S. team staged an impressive day of singles matches but couldn’t make up for their deficit. This loss has been a heavy burden on Bradley, who said he would “never get over it.”
