Rory McIlroy Receives Apology Following Ryder Cup Incident

Rory McIlroy and his new wife, Erica, had to endure a hostile environment at the last Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. The couple was met with a mob hostility from a hyperpartisan mob. The most shocking moment came when a contestant hurled a beer, striking Erica McIlroy. During that three-day event, McIlroy—playing for the European team captained by Luke Donald—was often in a decidedly unfriendly environment. Instead, this adversity strengthened the team’s determination and propelled them to victory.

The Ryder Cup was a wonderful advertisement for the sport. It included such a competitive rivalry that Europe took a 12-5 lead into the final session. Led by U.S. captain Keegan Bradley, the U.S. team staged an impressive day of singles matches but couldn’t make up for their deficit. This loss has been a heavy burden on Bradley, who said he would “never get over it.”

In a classy move recognizing the awkward situation, Derek Sprague contacted McIlroy by email to offer an apology in good faith. Sprague’s connection to Erica McIlroy, as a colleague at the PGA of America, added a personal touch to the apology. Rory McIlroy called the email “wonderful” and thanked Jay for recognizing what a difficult week it was to all of them.

“I got a lovely email from Derek Sprague apologizing,” – Rory McIlroy

In retrospect, McIlroy said that the crowd’s negativity ended up bringing the European squad closer together. It only intensified their bond and iron will. He stated, “That made us better as a team. It galvanized us and it really put our arms around each other.” The environment, though difficult, was a positive factor in the team’s toughening and success.

“I take it as a compliment that they targeted me, but then at the same time, it was a tough week,” – Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy has largely had a year to remember in his sport. He’s had a number of successes, with victories coming at the Players Championship, Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Irish Open. The juxtaposition of his personal success with the Ryder Cup experience, a once in a lifetime opportunity, illustrates the dualities present in competitive sports.

Rory McIlroy and the past year that has led up to this moment. He accepts accountability for all of his victories and failures. He remarked, “Honestly, in my wildest dreams, I didn’t know. I mean, I knew a year like this was possible, but it has just been an amazing 10 months.”
