Coventry City bounced back from their first league defeat of the season with a strong performance against Sheffield United, securing a 3-1 victory at the CBS Arena. The victory was Coventry’s ninth win of the campaign. Even more importantly, though, it bolsters their case as the league’s top title contender. Brandon Thomas-Asante was the brightest star on that night, scoring the third and final goal to guarantee a win. This landmark accomplishment further established him as one of the league’s premier scorers.
The story Sheffield United
Under the charge of manager Chris Wilder, Sheffield United made an encouraging impression early on, but couldn’t sustain their initial thrust. Although they had Coventry’s defense rattled, they lost out to a cavalcade of masterfully crafted set pieces. Sheffield United have little time to adapt as they continue to linger within the relegation zone. They’ve lost their last three games, to Coventry City, Preston and Derby all recently.
Coventry’s Strong Response
After their recent FA Cup loss, Coventry City showed spirit and fight from the start of the game to the end. They first found themselves behind after an opening spell of pressure from Sheffield United yielded early dividends. The hosts quickly regrouped. Thankfully, their very first goal came from a set piece – showcasing their tactical intelligence in the art of set pieces.
It wasn’t just the sense of belief that made the energy on display by Coventry City during the latter half so striking. Players had grit and control, moving through the game at their pace. Frank Lampard, Coventry’s manager, was well aware of the danger Sheffield United still posed despite their table standing.
“They’re no mugs obviously. Their league position is what it is but they’re a good team and I’ve got a lot of respect for Chris [Wilder] so I knew it was a tough match.” – Frank Lampard
The Connective team fully embraced this mantra and continued to apply pressure on their competitors. They didn’t let that deter them. Instead, they responded by going after every opportunity.
Thomas-Asante Shines
One of the key players in helping Coventry City to their landmark win was no surprise, as Brandon Thomas-Asante stole the show. It was telling that his late match winner provided the team their first big moment. Fittingly enough, it made him a joint top scorer in the Championship this season. The forward’s performance epitomized not only what makes him so crucial to the side, but how he scores goals.
Coventry City’s attack overall was a very pragmatic one that used set plays really well to locate scoring chances. That untraditional strategy ended up returning bigger dividends than anyone anticipated. Late in the match, the forward broke free within striking distance of the goal and capitalized on his third chance.
Wright’s performance today was a major positive one. He came close to scoring with a thumping header but Sheffield United’s Michael Cooper had a brilliant save in his locker. These planned and scrappy efforts displayed Coventry’s offensive arsenal and drive to come away with a decisive victory.
Challenges for Sheffield United
Sheffield United were up against it for most of the game. Despite Chris Wilder’s assertion that his team played “toe-to-toe with the best team in the league,” they struggled to find their rhythm. The failure to finish their chances would come back to earth as they succumbed to Coventry’s quick-strike counters.
Wilder expressed disappointment with his team’s performance after the match. He conceded it is always tough coming up against an organised outfit such as Coventry City, but identified what his team must work on moving forward.
“I was delighted with the way they saw the game out, a lot of corners later on in the game, but we dug in and you have to sometimes.” – Chris Wilder
The pressure continues to build on Sheffield United as they continue to tread a difficult stretch in their campaign. With their dismal form having taken them further into relegation worries, they need to pick themselves up fast to avert the danger of still deeper wounds.
