To his credit he exhibited amazing stubbornness being denied on three occasions by goalie Jakub Markovic before netting with a deflected shot from a 34th minute corner kick. His determination and skill added to Arsenal’s attacking threat and provided further evidence of the team’s depth and talent.
Arteta appreciated Merino’s experience and personality after last season. This was crucial in his decision to deploy him as a striker in the second leg versus Slavia Prague. Mikel had never played as a striker at either club or international level. Based on his breakout reaction performance last season, he’s a guy who showed a lot of promise.
