England Cricketers Sign Central Contracts Ahead of 2027 Ashes

Ben Stokes has solidified his commitment to the England cricket team by extending his central contract through to the end of the next home Ashes series in 2027. This announcement is simply one piece of a larger strategy to start rewarding these players for their performances over the past year. It prepares the ground for what will be the 50-over format’s marquee event later this year in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, just after the Ashes finish.

In addition to Stokes, Jofra Archer too has put pen to paper on a long-term deal after returning to the Test fold. With their debuts, both players join an elite company of only 14 cricketers to have played for both countries. Indeed, they’ve sewn up two year agreements next to household names like Joe Root and Harry Brook. This powerful gesture is a clear show of faith from the England selectors in these athletes, as they prepare to compete in the biggest international competitions to come.

Of the 11 players from the Ashes squad to have signed two-year contracts, Kohli, Starc, Smith and Harry Brook are key players for their teams’ fortunes. As such, they’ll be indispensable actors in determining what happens next. Stokes’ last agreement was set to expire at the end of next summer. This extension is incredibly important for creating the continuity needed as the team prepares to transition to the highly competitive series.

Jamie Overton has opted to step away from red-ball cricket. He’s negotiated a one-year agreement, within his first ever central contract. The contracts represent a unique mix of familiar, present-day stars of the game and future talent. Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Shoaib Bashir and Matthew Potts are the players in the Ashes squad on one-year deals.

Mark Wood is a work in progress on his own journey with England. He is now well into the home stretch of that three year contract, which he signed in 2023. Sonny Baker, Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood also signed one-year deals, making them professional cricket’s second-youngest debutants. This decision reinforces England’s pursuit of developing homegrown talents under its cricketing umbrella.

Further development contracts have been given to Josh Hull, Mitchell Stanley, Eddie Jack and Tom Lawes. This step demonstrates both a faith and investment in the future of the sport’s brightest, up-and-coming young stars. Not all beloved regulars will be remaining on the list. Chris Woakes has withdrawn after retiring from international cricket last month, and Jonny Bairstow’s two-year central contract has just finished.
