Sacramento Kings Face Challenges Amid Keegan Murray’s Injury

The Sacramento Kings have hit a much more serious and perilous skid that could sink their entire season. They’re even worse off without fourth-year wing Keegan Murray. Murray, perhaps their most important starter at power forward, is out. He hurt his left thumb, tearing his UCL in the process, during preseason. He is in the process of rehabilitation at the moment. At the same time, the Kings have been increasingly terrible on the defensive end, obviously missing him badly.

Sacramento’s current defensive rating of 118.3 points allowed per 100 possessions is the fourth-worst in the NBA. This statistic highlights the team’s difficulties on the defensive end, especially as they attempt to regroup following a disappointing 2-5 record. Their latest home loss to lowly Denver on Monday night only drove home how much the absence of Murray has been felt not just in that frontcourt anchor spot.

With Murray out for the season, the veteran Russell Westbrook has taken over as a starter. Westbrook ended up signing a one-year minimum deal with the Kings. All this while he’s playing a very different role, stepping up to fill the gaps left by injuries. Though he comes with loads of experience, Murray’s combination of size, playmaking and defense were the clear missing ingredients.

All the while, the Kings have been actively looking to add to their surprise roster. One interesting player on such a chicken-and-egg vibe could be Precious Achiuwa, entering his sixth season in the NBA. Achiuwa would have an impressive playoff pedigree. He has appeared in 17 of the New York Knicks’ last 17 postseason games, starting twice during that span. We think his experience would offer a wealth of depth and support for Sacramento as they push to move up the standings.

If the Kings have any hope of bouncing back after three pathetic games, the return of Keegan Murray will be vital. His impacts on both sides of the court are imperative. Collectively, they’ll raise Sacramento’s overall talent level and better position them to compete in the brutal Western Conference.
