Zion Williamson, the star, all-world player of the New Orleans Pelicans, will miss at least a week of action. He is dealing with a bone bruise in his left foot. This leg injury only exacerbates Williamson’s history of health complications, having missed the bulk of last season and all of the previous season due to other injuries. The team recently announced the news after their game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, where Williamson led the Pelicans in points, rebounds, and assists.
Williamson, the number one overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, has been one of the most spectacular players in the league when he’s on the floor. At only 25 years of age, there is no denying that he runs the paint for the Pelicans. He’s currently averaging 22.8 points per game to go with 6.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists, wow! Availability is a concern beyond the betting numbers. Those are concerns considering he’s exceeded 61 games just twice over his six-year NBA career.
This season, Williamson only missed one game before his injury. He has already missed the October 27 return game against the Boston Celtics due to a left foot bone contusion. With his age and the fact that last season he played just 30 games. In March, the Pelicans announced they would shut him down with a bone bruise in his back. His chronic hamstring problems have forced him to miss time from each of the last four seasons. This pattern has caused a lot of concern regarding his long-term health and durability.
The Pelicans have been up and down without Williamson, but make no mistake as evident after their rough loss to the Thunder in their last game. Next, though, they’ll welcome the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday at the Smoothie King Center. Their singular aim is to recover from a loss in court just days ago. Now with Williamson on the shelf, the team is at a crossroads. Other teammates are going to have to do a lot more with their leading scorer and playmaker unavailable.
The Pelicans organization announced it will reassess Williamson’s condition at an undisclosed point in the future, although no date has been given. Fans and former teammates, too, continue to follow McCoy’s recovery process with great interest. For their part, UT fans can only be hopeful that he’ll be back on the court ASAP.
