Beginning in 2026, LIV Golf events will be 72-holes, a huge departure from their current 54-hole format. This makes the league more consistent with the traditional league structure that is known around the world. It retains thrilling elements like shotgun starts and concurrent play in individual and team competitions.
Previously, LIV Golf marketed itself as a faster-paced alternative to the PGA Tour, attracting players and fans looking for a different experience. One way the league has responded is by making tournaments even longer. This explicit and strategic move is intended to increase its attractiveness and credibility in the eyes of the professional golf community. With all LIV Golf tournaments starting on Thursdays from now on, the biggest difference was the lack of conformity.
In July 2025, LIV Golf applied for recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), an important step for its golfers seeking pathways to major championships. Sadly, this application was rejected in October 2023, forcing the league to reconsider its tournament format and competitive structure.
