It was a week full of super bowl contender hopefuls shuffling their hopes in dramatic fashion, as we continue to make turns deeper into this NFL season. Among the highlights, the Green Bay Packers, who began the season with impressive victories, encountered difficulties that mirrored past struggles. From there the Kansas City Chiefs’ curse of losing the close ones lived on. At the same time, the Buffalo Bills showed remarkable fortitude in coming back against heavyweights.
And in case you needed another sign about the unpredictable nature of this league, the week ended with Drew Stanton driving his team to victory in truly sad fashion. Teams are preparing for their playoff push. Together, their performance in these high-stakes matchups paints a promising backdrop to move toward equity.
Packers Struggle to Find Consistency
The Green Bay Packers started their season with a bang, securing blowout wins against the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders. By the middle of December, their record had dropped to 8-6 and you started to wonder if they would be able to keep it up. The free fall started with an embarrassing weekend loss at home against the Cleveland Browns. It was followed up by another ugly draw against the Dallas Cowboys.
While the Packers wrestled with their sense of self, doubt lingered about whether they could contend with the league’s best. The inconsistency in their performance raised alarms about their playoff prospects as they navigated through tough matchups that tested their resolve.
Green Bay was out of sorts on both sides of the ball. Their inability to secure crucial wins in pivotal moments has left fans and analysts uncertain about whether this team can reclaim its earlier form.
Bills Show Resilience Against Chiefs
The Buffalo Bills demonstrated commendable fortitude in their recent matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, holding their own on the defensive end. Josh Allen’s offensive gameplan seemed very safe and even conservatively protective, as he had just one designed run all game long. Yet that one run was consequential, picking up a key third down with a gain of 11 yards.
Dalton Kincaid was the Bills best player on the field, catching six passes for 101 yards. Chiefs’ starting linebackers Drue Tranquill and Nick Bolton put the clamps on at all the key points. They overplayed him to the wall the entire game.
Even with all their work, the Chiefs had another year of close-game misfortune. They have now lost all four of their matchups decided by seven points or fewer this season, raising concerns about their late-game execution. When Harrison Butker added a 19-yard field goal, it hardly took the heat off the team. They still have a hard time translating those opportunities into wins.
Colts and Panthers Face Off
In the second such contest, the Indianapolis Colts hosted one of the few remaining teams whose 2023 season started on the right foot. Quarterback Jones utilized all of Pierce’s 6’3” frame, looking deep downfield, building an early offensive statement with a long touchdown strike.
Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich played it smart and took the ball first. And they strategically selected which end to protect during the second period. This decision reflected their tactical approach and clear desire to create as many scoring chances as possible.
While it lived up to expectations in many ways, one quarterback’s uneven performance left a mark among all the electric plays on the field. He had 20 yards rushing while finishing 14 of 25 passing — 143 yards and two touchdown passes. He had one interception and got sacked five times. This performance was emblematic of the ups and downs all teams have experienced as they adjust to this wild and unpredictable 2020 season.
James Cook III was huge throughout the week, rushing for 114 yards on 27 attempts as well. His powerful performance highlighted his importance to the team’s offensive strategy while showcasing his ability to carry the load in crucial moments.
