Brock Purdy still hasn’t returned to action and is still dealing with a persistent toe injury that’s obviously affected him. The signal-caller has missed the last three weeks, though he’s been a limited participant in practice each week. He was still not completely healed. So do the San Francisco 49ers, who are prepared to start Mac Jones in their next game. He’s going to be going up against the New York Giants.
Purdy has undergone his own struggles this season, as he’s only started two of nine games due to a turf toe injury. He incurred this injury during a win against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. After re-injuring his shoulder he’s missed all action since Week 4. The last few weeks, he has really solely concentrated on player specific drills. In any case, he did take more first-string offensive reps this week than he did last week. This is definitely progress in his recovery.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan reiterated that Purdy’s toe is “not completely healed.” He pointed out that even with Purdy’s clearer participation, it’s not enough for him to be fully cleared to return to gameplay.

It’s the first time since Purdy’s Week 4 start against Jacksonville that he’s not been a lock to start come game week. Contrary to that early report, he hasn’t been ruled out! His status for the important matchup against the Giants is up in the air. He would either serve as the primary Mac Jones backup or emergency third string while Adrian Martinez is the second string.
The team is eagerly looking ahead to their next game. The uncertainty around Purdy muddies their offensive gameplan. It’s unclear at this point whether or not he’ll be able to play even in limited form against New York.
