Our returning Pro Bowl cornerback from the Seattle Seahawks, Devon Witherspoon is home! After missing five of the team’s first six games due to a knee injury, 405 is gearing up to hit the field once more. Witherspoon was the first defensive player selected in the regular 2023 NFL Draft, going 5th overall. In his young career, he’s already made an undeniable impact — being named a Pro Bowler in each of his first two seasons. His return is certainly welcomed as the Seahawks continue to wade through injury troubles on their roster.
Witherspoon had an MCL bruise in the fourth quarter of the Seahawks’ season opener. The injury happened late in their thrilling Week 2 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Even after completing that game and playing all of his defensive snaps, he was out the next two games. He rebounded nicely in Week 4, playing on every snap against the Arizona Cardinals. Unfortunately, as he battled back, he was re-injured, missing three more games.
I was feeling really good in that Arizona game.” Witherspoon said. “I don’t think anything was wrong with me, but after the game I needed to take a break. There is an admirable quality of persistence and resilience that comes through as well. They show the excessive standards he holds himself to as a former No.
Seattle’s defensive coordinator, Mike Macdonald, expressed enthusiasm about Witherspoon’s return. “I’m excited for him. Our team is really happy to have him back in the fold,” said Macdonald. Additionally, he spoke to the energy Witherspoon brings that has dramatically improved the team’s morale and on-field performance.
Witherspoon’s return is a major shot in the arm for Seattle’s beleaguered defense. The team is still facing significant hurdles, with a number of players out for upcoming games. Of those ruled out, safety Julian Love stands out as one of five players ruled out due to injury. In addition to Love, WRs Jake Bobo and Dareke Young will miss this game. Even worse news for the OL room is that tight end Eric Saubert and offensive lineman Christian Haynes are out.
Even with these disappointments, Seattle is still thrilled to have back with us, Robbie Ouzts. He’s currently on injured reserve, where he’s spent the last four games. This roster adjustment comes as Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Tory Horton remain the only healthy receivers available to support quarterback Geno Smith.
Witherspoon looked forward to making plays again on the field with his teammates when play resumed but made it clear readiness should be expected from each player. “Everybody got to get ready like they a starter, you never know when your number gonna get called,” he said. This is a testament to the unique, collaborative culture we’ve created here. Thanks especially to the coaches, players, production staff and creative team who made it happen!
