On Friday, the National Basketball Association (NBA) shared some very cool news. Referees will begin using headsets in regular-season games starting Saturday, Oct. 31, 2025. This program is just the first phase of a two-part plan to better facilitate communications between officials and administrators on game days. The league’s decision represents a monumental shift in the way referees will control weekend in-game situations on the field, especially during the new replay reviews and stops in play.
During this first stage of implementation, referees will use earpieces attached to their uniforms with a clip. In this first stage, referees will wear headsets only during instant replay reviews and game stoppages. That would usher in a time of peace that his supporters hope will extend at least until January 2026, and beyond the All-Star break in February, if not permanently. They won’t be using the devices during live play just yet. This allows time for officials to adapt to the new technology while ensuring that it does not disrupt the flow of the game.
The second phase of the plan is dependent on a review of the first phase. If found successful, then referees will move to wearing the earpieces for the full game, including during play. This last improvement offers a way for incident response officials to be in direct communication with each other 24/7. They can now instantly connect with the NBA replay center. This kind of direct communication is intended to improve the transparency and efficiency of decision-making on game day.
With this announcement, the league has hit an audacious home run. It demonstrates their commitment to raise officiating standards and delivering a better gameplay experience to players and fans alike! And by introducing headsets the NBA hopes to reduce the number of moving parts in communication between referees to produce the truest refereeing possible.
