As the NFL trade deadline looms closer, teams are stepping up their games. …to address immediate needs and make them more competitive as they look forward to the 2024 season. The New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, and several other franchises are making significant moves to either strengthen their squads or prepare for the future. With different goals in mind, franchises such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos are similarly making decisions with a high degree of deliberation.
The Patriots have a brutal hand. They recently moved players on that side of the ball in Keion White to the San Francisco 49ers and Kyle Dugger to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Those two trades are indicative of their deafening desire to continue changing their roster for the better. Going forward, it’s obvious they desperately need safety (S) and running back (RB) positions. They further need a premier edge rusher to take their defense to the next level. To help fill some of these gaps, they brought on board offensive lineman Jonah Jackson. This sweep is primarily a vote of confidence in Jay Tufele, to fortify the middle of their line.
The 49ers’ Tactical Acquisitions
And no team is making bolder moves than the San Francisco 49ers to improve their defense. Specifically, they’ve traded for Tennessee Titans’ cornerback Roger McCreary. The 49ers are making big moves to fill some of the most important holes in their lineup. They particularly need to beef up their interior defensive line, edge rusher, and linebacker depth. So the addition of Brian Robinson Jr. increases their offensive potential. This action allows them to be more competitive as they fight for a playoff berth.
San Francisco’s boldness in seeking trades to fill immediate holes highlights their aggressive mindset towards assembling a championship-level roster. The addition of McCreary provides championship caliber depth to an already impressive secondary. It further underscores their strategic conviction to double down on shore-up essential positions of strength. As they navigate through the rest of the season, the 49ers will need to capitalize on these additions to secure a strong postseason position.
Buccaneers and Broncos: Assessing Future Needs
It’s going to be a tough offseason for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They could use two new off-ball linebackers at a minimum to make their depth chart fearsome. With veteran Lavonte David now 35 years old and continuing on a series of one-year deals, the Buccaneers recognize the importance of developing younger talent at that position. This urgency is fueled further by the desire to protect a competitive window and a rapidly escalating arms race within an ever-growing difficult NFC South division.
And the Denver Broncos remain the most vague on what is most important to address in the short term. They’re probably preparing to take the field with barreling defensive back Jahdae Barron. As the Broncos continue to evaluate their roster and potential free agents and draft picks, they need to identify where they can get better. Addressing these gaps will be necessary to accelerate their leadership. Of course, how the team decides to act at this pivotal moment will decide its trajectory for years to come.
Commanders and Titans: Draft Strategy Considerations
Washington Commanders head into critical decision-making point as they look towards the 2024 draft. With both their second- and fourth-round picks already traded away, they must prioritize acquiring young talent to replenish their roster. The urgency for new blood is palpable, as the Commanders rear up for a fight to reclaim the NFC East, one of the toughest divisions in football.
Little do the Tennessee Titans know, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. They need to focus on retaining their great 2025 draft class, including stars like Jeffery Simmons and Peter Skoronski. Keeping the focus on these important assets going forward will be essential to their long-term prosperity. As the Titans continue to operate within this challenging trade landscape, they need to weigh their short-term needs with their long-term potential.
Chiefs’ Strategy and Panthers’ Playoff Aspirations
The Kansas City Chiefs are employing a strategy of trading veterans such as L’Jarius Sneed and Joe Thuney to recoup valuable draft picks. Moore trade nonetheless proves general manager Brett Veach’s categorical vision for roster management. This underrated skill beyond just making the Chiefs more competitive now is largely setting them up for future drafts, too.
Meanwhile, the usually-dominant Carolina Panthers are at risk of missing out on a playoff spot. Unlike in 2021, now they’re not sure what their prospects in 2025 would be. As they evaluate potential trades and acquisitions, it will be crucial for them to align their short-term goals with long-term aspirations.
