Falcons Hopeful for Penix’s Return Against Patriots

The Atlanta Falcons are optimistic about quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s possible return. This week they are preparing for the New England Patriots on Sunday. Penix remains in recovery from a bone bruise in his left knee. He’s been listed as day-to-day, the same designation given wide receiver Drake London.

>Fighting through sobs, head coach Raheem Morris said he believed in Penix’s ability to come back. He was pleased to see that the youngest of the quarterbacks is improving and feeling much better than the week before. “He feels better than he did last week. … So, I feel really good about him,” Morris stated during a press conference.

Penix participated in Wednesday’s practice and reported feeling positive about his condition, indicating that he is “trending in the right direction” for the game against the Patriots. Unfortunately, earlier in the week he had been ill. So, he made plans to miss the Falcons’ home game against the Miami Dolphins. He reflected on his decision, saying, “I don’t feel like me being out there would have helped the team,” emphasizing the importance of being fully fit to contribute effectively.

Morris was first excited to catch a glimpse of Penix going up against the Dolphins. He was adamant that Penix would be ready by then. The decision was made to hold both Penix and London out of that game, with Kirk Cousins stepping in as quarterback.

Even with the disappointment, Morris was able to reassure that Penix’s focus is still on being a big part of this team – going to meetings, getting ready for practice. “Michael is in the building, obviously in meetings. … We’ll get a chance to get a feel for what he can do in practice, if he can do anything,” Morris added.

As the week moves forward, both Penix and London will set their focus getting back on the field as quickly and safely as possible. Morris noted that London is feeling good and plans to practice, which could bolster the Falcons’ offense if both players are cleared to play.
