The Washington Commanders will take on the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9 without their best player and star WR Terry McLaurin. He recently suffered a quad injury that will keep him out of Saturday’s game. This latest setback comes after McLaurin aggravated the injury during Monday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he made a diving catch with just under two minutes left in the third quarter.
Coach Dan Quinn confirmed McLaurin’s absence, stating, “This is not something that will knock him out for a long time.” Beyond the injury itself, the timing of his injury is perhaps his greatest challenge. This underachieving and underwhelming squad was already dealing with their share of big-name injuries this season.
McLaurin’s injury history this year has been scary. He’s just gotten over a bruised heel that had plagued him the past three games. This very injury forced him to miss at least one game earlier this season. In the two games since then, he averaged just three-and-a-half catches for a total of 13 yards. This latest quad concern brings to mind a more serious injury he sustained in last year’s Week 4 win against the Raiders. That injury knocked him out for four games.
In Monday’s game against the Chiefs, McLaurin caught three passes for 54 yards and scored a touchdown. Unfortunately, it looks like he had to end his performance early after re-aggravating his quad injury. The Commanders have struggled to build a reliable receiving corps. This year, they’ve played just two games with all three of their top receivers healthy. With McLaurin out, the team’s offensive approach will have to adjust a third time.
Jayden Daniels, who’s set to replace McLaurin, understood that’s just part of injuries in football. He stated, “That’s just football and you’ve got to be able to adapt.” That means the Commanders are going to have to depend on other players to make up for the loss of their top pass catcher.
Our team members are preparing to take on the Seahawks. They’ll need to go beyond replacing McLaurin to be competitive, but the specter of a continued rash of injuries looms overhead, one that saps their competitive advantage almost weekly. With McLaurin’s current statistics showing 13 receptions for 203 yards and one touchdown for the season, his presence on the field has been crucial for the Commanders’ offensive performance.
