After an underwhelming year at the helm, New Orleans Saints Head Coach Kellen Moore decided to take a risky step. On Tuesday, he made a declaration that no one saw coming — Tyler Shough will be the starting quarterback going forward. This announcement comes after the Saints’ recent 23-3 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which dropped the team’s record to 1-7. Moore addressed the need for some consistency at quarterback. He sounded quite sure that Shough is the guy who can be the signal-caller to get them there.
Moore 48 hours to look at both Shough and Spencer Rattler, with whom he eventually went. He was not a fan of the yo-yoing quarterbacks. To him, that means establishing a level of consistency in order to maximize their scoring firepower. “Tyler’s starting, so we’re not looking back on that,” Moore remarked, indicating a definitive shift in strategy.
This move is a change in tone from earlier in the season when Rattler was chosen to start over Shough. Considering how often their offense is struggling right now, Moore decided a change was warranted. He explained that he wanted to give Shough the freedom to play without the pressure of having to compete for the starting job.
“We’re not doing this back-and-forth thing. I think certainly that’s the goal,” – Kellen Moore
Shough, who’s been waiting in the wings for this chance, was happy to be able to help. He stressed that developing personal connections with fellow players has been key to creating a strong chemistry on the team, and particularly during this unprecedented and difficult era. “Obviously it’s not like a fun situation. We’re 1-7 so far this session. Getting a few practice reps with the whole team has been amazing and so helpful!
Rattler will take on the new role of backup quarterback, supporting Shough as he eases into this new job. Moore noted that Rattler’s experience will help Rattler get Shough to excel on the field.
Both quarterbacks have acknowledged the importance of collaboration and communication among teammates to improve their performance. Shough remarked on the positive dynamics within the locker room, stating, “I mean, so far so good. I think just building those relationships with those guys, it’s been awesome throughout the locker room.”
The Saints are currently seeking a turnaround after a season marked by inconsistency and struggles on offense. Now, with Shough in the driver’s seat, he is poised to be a catalyst for change. Along with Moore, they’re incredibly motivated to redeem their reputations in the league and prove everyone wrong by winning.
