Late last night, state and federal authorities apprehended Chauncey Billups at his home in Oregon. To make things worse, this unfortunate incident happened on the same day that his team — the Portland Trail Blazers — lost their season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Billups, 49, was one of 31 people arrested in an early morning federal investigation into ticket fraud and conspiracy. The investigation revealed a scheme to fix high-stakes poker games connected to three different Mafia families.
This arrest reveals troubling allegations that run the gamut from illegal sports betting through swatting in poker games. We welcome their continued efforts to crack down on the organized, vast network suspected of rigging poker tournaments for financial gain. After his arrest, Billups was taken before a judge and released from custody on various conditions. In light of these events, he has been put on administrative leave by the Trail Blazers.
Chris Heywood, Billups’ attorney, had strongly denied the allegations against his client. Durkan cited Billups’ integrity and character in his public announcement of the decision.
“To believe that Chauncey Billups did what the federal government is accusing him of is to believe that he would risk his Hall of Fame legacy, his reputation and his freedom,” – Chris Heywood.
Billups isn’t the only big name caught up in this scandal. Charlotte Hornets player Terry Rozier was similarly apprehended in the same sting operation. The probe into this purported illegal gambling ring has caused major concern throughout the basketball world.
Detroit Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who has known Billups since seventh grade, expressed concern over the implications of gambling within professional sports. Specifically, he addressed the need for players and coaches to exercise care in their interactions with people outside their organizations.
“When you get in bed with sports betting and gambling, there’s a lot of things that come with it. All money ain’t good money,” – J.B. Bickerstaff.
Bickerstaff, too, called for patience as the legal process continues. He stressed the emotional impact that such a situation might have on Billups and his family.
“I think everyone needs to allow due process to happen, and then obviously judgments can be made. You feel for anyone you’ve known and have a relationship with and know his family well. I know he’s going through it. It’s a difficult time for him,” – J.B. Bickerstaff.
During a recent broadcast, sports commentators Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith took on the implications of Billups’ arrest.
