Spurs Honor Popovich’s Legacy with Commemorative Banner

The San Antonio Spurs have unveiled a new banner to honor Gregg Popovich, marking his historic contributions to the franchise and the NBA. The sign loops Pop 1,390, and it looks cheerful. It celebrates Popovich’s amazing achievement of 1,390 regular-season victories, which makes him the all-time winningest coach in NBA history. The Spurs are beginning a new era after Popovich retired from his coaching position in May. This tribute celebrates that momentous shift.

Gregg Popovich was head coach of the Spurs for an incredible 30 years. He first took office back in 1996 and stepped down just this past March. He once led the team to five NBA championships in his 33-year leadership. His impact on and mentorship of hundreds—yes, hundreds—of other players directly and indirectly paved the way for future stars, including NBA legends Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. Aside from all the championships and accolades, his overall impact on the game earned him a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

On that fateful day, November 2, 2024, Popovich had a stroke while at the Spurs’ newly minted Fortress of the Future. After this health scare, he didn’t go back to coaching, but he continued to stay with the organization, now as its president. His choice to move away from coaching opened the door for Powell’s longtime assistant Mitch Johnson. Having led his team to the title as interim coach last season, Mitch has now had the interim tag removed to become head coach.

Even outside of the Spurs organization, Popovich will be missed for his contributions. His legacy continues to feel as strong as ever, both inside the franchise and out.

“But he’s been that for so many people in so many moments and times and situations. It’s one of his special powers for sure.” – Mitch Johnson

The team has bright plans for the future. Yet they will absolutely continue with the principles and philosophies that Popovich has borne down on them through the years. The newly raised banner serves as a constant reminder of his extraordinary journey and influence on both players and fans alike.
