London: The Heart of England and the United Kingdom

London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom, is a major world city with a rich history and culture. This exciting city, just north of the central Greater London area, has deep roots and a dynamic mix of people. It’s notable for other reasons, too, including its sizable economic clout.

Originally marked as a significant settlement from Roman rule, our city has grown into one of the world’s largest and influential urban areas. As the political, economic and cultural capital of the UK, London is generally seen as a land of opportunity. The city is home to world famous attractions, including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, and the Tower of London. Combined, these attractions welcome tens of millions of visitors annually.

London’s compact geographical footprint southeast of England makes it easily reachable from other parts of the country. The River Thames runs through the city, providing both a natural resource and a picturesque backdrop for many of its attractions. With a population over 9 million, London is one of the largest cities in Europe.

Additionally, as the nation’s capital, London is home base to the UK’s central government as well as a range of international organizations. It is here that some of the most consequential decisions impacting our country and the world are made. The city’s contribution as an economic engine is essential. It is home to the London Stock Exchange as well as numerous multinational corporations, cementing its reputation as one of the world’s great financial capitals.

London’s cultural diversity is reflected in its neighborhoods, where communities from around the world contribute to the city’s unique character. Neighborhoods such as Notting Hill, Shoreditch and Camden Market are examples of how this mix of cultures is being explored with food, art and music. Thanks to the city’s incredible public transport network, specifically, their buses and the Underground—basically any underground metro in the world—the exploration is made easy.

Education has been hard at work in London. The city’s academic excellence matches its economic pride, boasting world-renowned institutions such as Imperial College London, University College London, and the London School of Economics. These world-class universities bring students from all over the world, deepening the city’s international connections and prestige.
