Josh Simmons was the Kansas City Chiefs’ first-round draft pick this past spring (2025). He is presently away from the team to tend to personal matters. In doing so, the rookie left tackle took a big risk, leaving only hours before the Chiefs’ scheduled kickoff against the Detroit Lions. Moments after accepting, he zipped back to his home base of San Diego. His absence has raised questions about his availability for the upcoming games, particularly Monday night’s matchup against the Washington Commanders.
Head coach Andy Reid has provided some updates on Simmons’ ever-changing condition. He noted that relationship with the rookie has been thorough, constant and friendly. Simmons will not be available for the season opener vs. Washington. Reid has expressed hope that he can be back in the next few weeks.
“There’s communication, and everything is positive. He’s been very good about communicating,” Reid remarked during a press conference, highlighting the team’s supportive approach to Simmons during this time.
In this Simmons, NBA first-round draft pick, high expectations are the norm. His role has changed too, as Jaylon Moore has stepped in to take over as the starting left tackle. Simmons was selected as the last pick in the draft’s first round, indicating the Chiefs’ belief in his potential to contribute to the team’s success.
Though he is facing a personal leave right now, an eventual return is expected on Simmons’ behalf. A reasonable timeframe would be early November, right around when the team’s bye-week occurs. This time should help him get back into the team, and more importantly, the right headspace.
For the moment, his absence will be felt as Simmons continues to address his personal situation. The Chiefs will continue to rely on Moore and other players in the offensive line as they prepare for their upcoming games.
