The Washington Commanders are off to an unexpectedly dismal start. Even head coach Dan Quinn has started to acknowledge that the ship is “sinking” following their most recent drubbing from the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys wooped the Commanders 44-22. This game exposed the team’s continued inability to score and raised alarm bells about their newfound lack of ability to defend. As they prepare for a crucial matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, Quinn and his staff must find effective solutions to turn the season around.
Quinn, who has made his bones as a coach with an emphasis on defense, talked about the need for self-scouting. He noted that both he and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. will need to make do with the players currently on the roster. Injuries have hit the Commanders, particularly on their defensive line, hard. On the defensive side, three defensive ends are lost for the year, including projected starter Dorrance Armstrong Jr. This lack of depth has only deepened their defensive issues, with a revolving door resulting in a lean rotation that’s wreaked havoc on the court.
One of the key acquisitions last season was cornerback Marshon Lattimore, brought in from the New Orleans Saints at a high price. Lattimore’s been a liability in coverage — rounding out what’s been a chaotic defensive season for the Saints. Quinn was clear to note that no one player should bear the full weight of their poor defensive showing. He emphasized that the onus is on players and coaches alike to continue growing together.
The Commanders will be hoping to regain their form. In the next few weeks, they get contending teams such as the Seattle Seahawks and the Detroit Lions. With these matchups, the onus will be on this young team to prove their mettle and adapt in pressurized situations. Quinn stated, “We’ll find out a lot about our team in these weeks ahead,” highlighting the importance of these games for assessing team dynamics and performance.
Injuries, of course, have wreaked havoc on the defense as they’ve done, to a lesser degree, on the offense. Quarterback Jayden Daniels has already been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Quinn stressed it’s not a “serious” or “long-term” issue. Daniels’ absence only makes things more difficult for the team. They are already going to war just to avoid relegation in the most brutal league in the world.
Quinn’s vision for overcoming these obstacles includes creating a culture of accountability at every level. He remarked, “We need everyone to step up – coaches and players. That’s our job.” This call to action is a testament to his character and willingness to lead and motivate his troops when the chips are down.
Moving forward, both Quinn and new GM Adam Peters will have to be on the lookout for possible trade or free agent moves to upgrade the defensive line. They’ll consider all kinds of moves to improve the roster. The pressure to make their defense built-patent is felt, as they look toward arguably one of their most challenging conference schedules to date.
