Jack Wilshere Takes the Helm at Luton Town

Jack Wilshere Takes the Helm at Luton Town

Earlier this month, Jack Wilshere, the former England international, was named head coach of Luton Town. This latest move brings his budding career full circle and is another big step forward. Wilshere is just 33 years old, but he’s already causing a stir as a young manager in the English Football League (EFL). He’s not yet the biggest fish to make the plunge into management. His appointment on Wednesday has been Luton Town’s attempt to arrest their fortunes after a less than ideal start as a newly promoted side.

Wilshere’s managerial experience covers a little over three years since he hung up his boots from professional football. He was the Arsenal Under-18s head coach before moving to Charlton. He was a first-team coach at Norwich City, where he was put in charge of the last two games of the previous season after Johannes Hoff Thorup was sacked. However little experience he may have had, Wilshere’s zeal and eagerness to learn the ropes of management have shone through.

A New Chapter for Luton Town

Wilshere’s debut home match in overall charge of Luton Town came against Mansfield. Sadly, the team fell short of their goals. The team faced a disappointing defeat, placing further pressure on the new manager as he aims to turn around the club’s fortunes. Luton Town is currently in the League One table‘s 14th position. This stance is a stark departure from the lofty goals promised back in the beginning of the season.

McLean, a player at Luton, commented on the situation, stating, “On paper at the start of the season, Luton were one of the favourites to go up, but that’s just because two years ago they were in the Premier League.” This perspective underscores the challenges Wilshere faces as he works to reshape the team’s identity and performance on the pitch.

With these challenges in mind, Wilshere has chosen another former England international, Chris Powell as his assistant. Powell is no stranger to the environmental arena. He’s done it at a first team level before, and has helped shape the English Football Associations national setup.

“Powell’s been there and done it at a high level, been involved with England, and he’ll help Jack hugely with his management style and identifying situations in games and training,” – McLean

Building Trust and Experience

Like Wilshere, his coaching staff has largely been handpicked from people he had experience with and trust in from his time in football. These appointments are significant because they come at a time where he’s attempting to bring a sense of order and clarity of purpose after a period of turmoil. The ex-midfielder understands that building a solid base is essential first, before any thoughts of promotion pretensions can be entertained.

As Wilshere navigates this new venture, McLean emphasizes the importance of focusing on immediate goals rather than long-term aspirations: “They shouldn’t even be thinking about promotion yet. Stop the rot, then next season they’ll be in a position to push for promotion.” This pragmatic advice reflects the current sentiment among players and fans who understand that rebuilding requires patience.

Wilshere himself is the first to admit that it starts with making sure there is a good environment at Luton. His ambition is to restore confidence between players and fans. While doing so, at the same time he is committed to creating a definite playing style that reflects his vision for the team.

“It’s about getting a feel-good factor back, establishing a style and identity, and then you can start talking about promotion.” – McLean

The Road Ahead for Wilshere

For Jack Wilshere, now starting down that same road with Luton Town, the road just may be long and very hard. He’s keenly aware that success—when it eventually comes—won’t occur overnight. Getting his game plan in place and a winning mentality through the program is going to take time. His willingness to learn and intention to create a collaborative culture with veteran staff such as Powell could serve him and his young department well.

To say these Luton Town supporters are excited would be an understatement! They’re confident Wilshere has got what it takes to kickstart the team’s fortunes and propel them up the League One table. The club has a great history to draw on and having played in the Premier League very recently raised hopes even higher. This puts a lot of pressure on Wilshere to be successful.
