The Carolina Panthers are signaling a change under center. They’ll likely be doing that with veteran Andy Dalton as they prepare for their matchup with the Buffalo Bills. With starting quarterback Bryce Young’s availability in question due to injury, the team has expressed confidence in Dalton’s ability to lead them on the field. As the backup quarterback, Dalton’s experience is his calling card. His impressive playoff track record might just be what the Panthers need in this must-win game.
Dalton, “Red Rifle” as he’s known, signed with the Panthers last year. Despite not playing much, he’s maintained a great attitude while being Young’s backup. We know that he is ready and confident enough to seize that opportunity should he be called upon. The Panthers’ coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Dave Canales, believes that Dalton can execute their game plan effectively.
The Veteran’s Journey and Current Role
The Cincinnati Bengals traded up into the second round for Dalton, selecting him 35th overall in 2011 NFL Draft. Over the course of his career, he’s developed himself into one of the most dependable quarterbacks in the game, leading multiple franchises through adversity and into the playoffs. His biggest splash came as an injury replacement for Dak Prescott that helped propel the Cowboys to a 5-0 start last season. He did—leading the Dallas Cowboys to a phenomenal game-winning field goal!
Dalton’s track record speaks volumes. He does have a Total QBR of 52 with the Bengals from 2011 to 2019. Since then, he’s fallen off a cliff, as he’s mustered a QBR of 47 in 35 starts with the Cowboys, Bears, Saints, and currently Panthers. Even with this, his overall winning percentage as a starter is only .400.
For now, Dalton is happy to have made the team and be in the position he is. He’s developed a great rapport with wideout Xavier Legette. He is looking forward to the opportunity to get the nod against the Bills if that is required. “If Andy does have to play, I have full confidence to be able to call a game the same way I would normally call it,” noted Canales, emphasizing Dalton’s ability to maintain an aggressive and balanced offensive approach.
Preparing for a Potential Start
The Panthers look to have a great game against the Bills. Newly-acquired Dalton is working diligently, looking to earn the job and take first-team reps. So he’s committed to trying to bring that mentality to every practice and game. Changes his tune until he gets the update he’s waiting for on the record. This mentality does an exceptional job of illustrating his professionalism, as well as his willingness to perform when his number is called.
What separates Dalton from his contemporaries is his ability to read defenses. As his fellow offensive lineman Connor McGovern said, “He came in and just ran the show. This faith in Dalton’s ability is a big key as the Panthers are still wading through an otherwise brutal season.
The relevance of Dalton’s experience can’t be overstated. In other ways, Young has had a hard time getting his footing in the NFL. In the meantime, Dalton’s new strategy of doing deep ball rocking could provide the Panthers a massive benefit against their upcoming opponent. Shaq Thompson took to social media to praise Dalton’s leadership potential. He continued, “He’s definitely going to be the driver of the train of all the things.”
