In further inexplicable bad fortune, Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier now find themselves in deep criminal legal jeopardy. Indicted on multiple counts of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, their actions have sent shockwaves across the sports community. According to the indictment, the duo took part in a conspiracy to provide insider information to gamblers, including about specific games that were to be played in the NBA. Damon Jones, another former NBA player and coach, has reportedly been tied to the case. He is accused of selling insider tips to co-conspirators all partaking in this sports betting conspiracy.
The federal indictment, announced on Thursday, suggests a coordinated effort to exploit insider information for gambling gains involving multiple NBA games. The indictment shows that Rozier provided key details to his childhood friend, business partner, and alleged co-conspirator Deniro Laster. He told Laster in advance that he planned to leave a regular-season Charlotte Hornets game early, due to a made-up injury. A confidante of one such co-conspirator was tipped off by the above. They actually made a bet on the Cavaliers to cover the spread in that same game.
The case does not stop with Rozier and Billups. It features Jones, who claims to have worked as a “face card” in a public corruption poker game. His involvement all the way up to forcing another player, Jontay Porter, to join in on the collusion in order to pay down gambling debts. Porter, formerly of the Toronto Raptors, had previously pleaded guilty to his role last summer.
Regardless of the integrity of these specific indictments, this case raises serious questions about the integrity of the NBA. In response, the league has begun its own parallel review process. The NBA stated, “We are in the process of reviewing the federal indictments announced today,” emphasizing their commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game. Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner, has expressed the league’s stance on such matters before, stating, “One of my most important responsibilities as commissioner of the NBA is to protect the integrity of professional basketball and preserve public confidence in the league and our sport.”
A number of high-profile games now face the familiar consequences of the allegations. Other teams working on these issues include the Charlotte Hornets, Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Toronto Raptors. The players named in the indictment including Damian Lillard, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis all played in competitive games tied to the insider dealings. Their participation in the case only complicates that picture. Highlighting one of such example games played on Jan 15th, 2024 vs Oklahoma City Thunder. Davis and James both played, despite being questionable on the injury report.
Given the severity of these allegations, there can be no place for Rozier. If the NBA determines that he has violated league rules, they hold the authority to expel him from professional basketball. The gravity of these accusations is underscored by statements from law enforcement officials who assert that “the sportsbooks themselves are victims in this case,” highlighting the broader implications of such illicit activities.
The effects of this latest scandal may change the way the NBA tries to regulate betting in the future. In December, Silver defended the need to protect the integrity of the game when it came to sports gambling. “Let me be clear: Any new approach must ensure the integrity of the game,” he stated in an article published by The New York Times.
As investigations continue and more details unfold, Billups and Rozier have consistently professed their innocence. Rozier’s attorney issued a statement of confidence in their defense, stating that he “looks forward to winning this fight.”
