Whether you’re talking about first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs’ otherworldly debuts for the Detroit Lions. His magnificent work led the way to a resounding 24-9 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night. The running back’s career night not only contributed to the Lions’ impressive record of 5-2 but showcased his potential as a rising star in the NFL.
On the field, Gibbs was perhaps the most dominant player to ever step on the gridiron. He accumulated an eye-popping 218 scrimmage yards, including 136 yards on the ground and 82 through the air. This performance makes him the second player over the past 15 years to accumulate 200 scrimmage yards. He scored what I believe was the first two scrimmage touchdowns ever scored during a Monday Night Football game.
Gibbs turned the crowd into a frenzy with a dazzling 84-yard second rushing touchdown. His third touchdown was a dextrous, goal line spin move, a five-yard display of his freakish athleticism. He displayed remarkable speed, recording a top speed of 22.2 mph on a rushing touchdown. This impressive feat was actually the fastest play by any offensive player this whole season.
Gibbs capped off an all-around impressive performance with a career-long 78-yard touchdown run. This incredible streak cemented his legacy in Lions lore as the longest of his NFL tenure. His achievement raises the bar pretty damned high for the franchise. It represents the most total scrimmage yards by a Lions player since Calvin Johnson tallied 329 scrimmage yards in 2013.
“Those really long ones are fun to watch, and I feel like I got the best seat in the house just to like see him hit the hole and then just like take off,” remarked Lions quarterback Jared Goff, highlighting Gibbs’ explosive speed.
With the story of his success at the forefront, Gibbs is now at an important crossroads in his career. He got a lot of inspiration from sharing the field with Lions legend Barry Sanders. Barry has been his inspiration and idol throughout his life. Gibbs would go on to express pride at how he performed. He was expecting a coming out party and was doing a victory lap for his eye-popping first 200-yard performance.
“This was my first 200-yard output, so yeah, it’s kinda special,” Gibbs stated after the game. His recognition of the offensive line’s contribution to his success further emphasizes the teamwork that propelled him to such heights.
Head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the build-up to this performance, stating, “You felt like this was coming. You felt like this has been building, and as he gets in better shape and starts getting his feet under him, starts getting the feel of it, starts breaking some tackles.”
Gibbs’ career night wasn’t just a checkmark on his resume—it’s a prime example of the connection with his teammates that continues to grow. Coming into his 3rd year, he should be well on his way for some better performances coming up.
I think there’s a lot more highlight plays in store for me,” he said with swagger.
In addition to his achievements on the field, Gibbs is a dedicated family man, as he proudly shares moments with his son, Ethan.
