Former NFL running back Doug Martin, known for his dynamic play on the field and personal struggles off it, has passed away at the age of 36. Photo by Jacob Kupferman/Getty Images In 2012, Martin became the first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Beyond his beautiful music, he was the victim of a truly sad episode shortly before he passed.
Martin’s career off to a great start. He finished his rookie year with the third-most yards from scrimmage in NFL history. He became a national star during his time at Boise State University. At the time of his retirement, he was ranked in the top 10 for both career rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. The Buccaneers rewarded his outstanding play by drafting him 31st overall in the 2012 NFL Draft.
During his NFL career, Martin rushed for 5,356 yards and 30 touchdowns. His career year came in 2015. He finished the season with 1,402 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns, in addition to catching 33 passes for 271 yards and another score. His extraordinary contributions quickly came to light. He was subsequently voted one of the 50 greatest players in franchise history during Tampa Bay’s 50-year anniversary celebration.
Despite his success on the field, Martin grappled with mental health challenges that significantly affected both his personal and professional life. “Doug’s parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support,” noted Athletes First, the agency that represented him during his NFL career.
In the days leading up to his death, Martin began to feel mentally overloaded and shaky. According to Athletes First, “Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police.” This event brought him to Oakland, California, where he later participated in a home-invasion robbery.

His short stature—he’s 5-foot-9—and his punishing playing style made him a fan favorite, with the nickname “Muscle Hamster”. For a time, Martin was lauded as an American athletic superman. Off the field, he continued to influence the Buccaneers franchise long after he retired.
