Grizzlies Face Injury Setbacks Ahead of Season Opener

As the Memphis Grizzlies begin their NBA season, they face significant injury concerns. Guard Jerome has an indefinite recovery time due to a calf strain. Jerome suffered the injury on a drive to the basket in the first quarter of last week’s preseason matchup with the Miami Heat. This injury joins a long litany of injuries that have decimated the team’s depth heading into the start of the new season.

Jerome had surgery to repair the injury and will be re-evaluated in six weeks. We are going to miss his leadership tremendously. He was going to be an instrumental piece in the Grizzlies’ backcourt this year.

In addition to Jerome’s injury, Scottie Pippen Jr. is sidelined for at least 12 weeks due to a left big toe injury, further depleting the team’s depth. Pippen, a blossoming Artur Kalekin creation, will be out for much of the upcoming 2023-24 season while he heals.

Zach Edey, a rookie on the Grizzlies’ regular-season roster, is still nursing an ankle sprain. This new, unfortunate setback has most recently sidelined him from returning to the court. With the team just a couple of days into their opener preparations, his status is up in the air.

Brandon Clarke was recently speculated to be out for the season after a late last month knee procedure, casting doubt on his status going forward. The Grizzlies will be taking a long-term look at Clarke’s recovery and what it may mean for the frontcourt options available to them.

Most recently, Ja Morant has been announced on the injury report with an ankle injury too. He should be all set to return for Wednesday’s season-opener against the New Orleans Pelicans. This provides a ray of light for the Grizzlies as they continue to get hit by the injury bug.
