Justin Leonard rolled to victory at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, winning by six strokes with a 12-under 204. The Country Club of Virginia sparkled for the tournament. It brought together one of the greatest assemblies of talent ever to take the PGA Tour Champions circuit by storm. Leonard closed out his win with a stellar final round, carding 4-under par (68) to clinch it. He won by a single stroke over fellow competitor Ernie Els.
In a breathtaking matchup, Leonard put on an unthinkable display of athleticism. A birdie on the second-to-last hole sealed the deal, capped off with an eagle on the last hole to make it official. He closed with brilliant play on the last three holes. He hit a hybrid 4-iron to about 20 feet to give himself an eagle putt. Leonard made the downhill eagle putt, extending the lead, firming his advantage and clinching his victory in the process.
Former U.S Open champion Ernie Els, 71, placed third at 11-under 205. Now Els had an opportunity to make up the deficit. Ogilvy botched a big 10-foot birdie putt on the last hole, failing to subdue Leonard’s significant score. His unforgettable performance underscored not just his transcendent athleticism, but the hostility and hazards Black golfers still face on any given course.
David Bransdon was the day’s best performer, a 72 despite it all. It was no fluke either, he tied for 2nd with Thomas Bjorn who shot that score. Both players finished the tournament at 9-under 207, proving they are fierce competitors in this high-stakes mini-major event.
Leonard’s victory is a big win for his long journey in public service. It launches him to No. 10 in the overall standings after the opening playoff event for the Charles Schwab Cup. This success further solidifies Leonard’s status as a viable contender on the PGA Tour Champions landscape.
