In our final post, Tommy Fleetwood enjoyed a valedictory win at the India Championship capping his first full blown victory on the European Tour. The English golfer registered a 7-under 65, putting him two shots clear of Japan’s Keita Nakajima. This victory cements Fleetwood’s place in professional golf and improves his opportunities to play in more top-level tournaments in the future.
Fleetwood was clearly in the zone during the tournament, draining birdies on four straight holes around the turn to put himself on the tight leaderboard. His strong performance landed him in the top ten. This accomplishment catapulted him into the top-10 on the list of European Tour players bound for PGA Tour cards.
This win means so much to me. It’s just one of those little things that makes this project really awesome, Fleetwood expressed after his victory.
This victory was just what the doctor ordered for Fleetwood. That makes him eligible for the highly-exclusive Abu Dhabi Championship and the season-ending Tour Championship, also in Dubai. Currently, he sits at 25th in the Race to Dubai, showcasing a strong season that has seen him progress significantly.
In sharp contrast, the biggest name in golf living or dead, Rory McIlroy, could do no better than T-26 being scored at 3 over 71. McIlroy closed with a birdie on his last hole. That did not come close to being enough to propel him within striking distance of the two highest finishers.
Fleetwood’s victory overshadowed the performance of his equally impressive competition. Shane Lowry, Thriston Lawrence and Alex Fitzpatrick each finished at 270, tying for third. This year’s deep competitive field at the India Championship proved to be Fleetwood’s sheer talent and fierce determination as he maneuvered through treacherous conditions.
Reflecting on his journey this year, Fleetwood acknowledged the highs and lows: “I feel like for all the good that’s happened this year, a couple of things have disappointed me.” This victory seems like a watershed moment in his career.
