Ray-Ray McCloud III, the most effective wideout on the NFL’s only undefeated group, took a knee. Yet coach Raheem Morris has termed it a “personal issue.” This surprising turn of events comes on the heels of McCloud being benched as a healthy scratch. It occurred during the Falcons’ stunning comeback win against the Buffalo Bills. The team has since clarified that he will miss next Friday’s ‘home’ game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Draft McCloud signed with Atlanta in 2024 and immediately established himself as a foundational piece in their dynamic new offense. He’s been one of the top three wide receivers in yards after catch since last season. His absence leads to more questions about what the team’s future plan may be, particularly after their last two performances.
Guiding Peterson, McCloud was spotted at Giants practice on Wednesday. He missed the on-ice sessions on Thursday and Friday for undisclosed, non-injury related reasons. Coach Morris went on to explain that sending McCloud home should not be looked at as a punishment.
“It is just more a football thing and what we got to get straightened out,” – Raheem Morris
Morris further elaborated on the situation, stating, “Excused absence — home. Working through some things right now that are private with my young man, and we’ll figure those things out as we go.” That’s a good sign that the creative team is serious about tackling whatever problems may have plagued McCloud so far.
McCloud’s decision to join the Falcons was heavily influenced by his excellent rapport with former wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard. Their relationship was key to his decision. Hilliard’s recent dismissal following a 30-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 3 adds another layer of complexity to McCloud’s situation. How that incredibly close bond shaped McCloud’s new emotional state — and the way he’s playing for the Chargers.
As the Atlanta Falcons prepare to host the San Francisco 49ers. They should have to change their offensive approach because one of their most dynamic playmakers is out for the season. McCloud’s absence would be a huge blow to their game plan. They’ll have to stay on top of their momentum though in what is sure to be a cutthroat division.
When ESPN contacted them, McCloud’s representative did not respond to a request for comment. That forced fans and analysts alike to begin speculating as to the broader, possible implications of his leave.
