In two of his most recent games, he set a franchise record by gaining an astounding 239 scrimmage yards in one game. This amazing accomplishment broke Christian McCaffrey’s previous record. Over that same two-game stretch, Dowdle has totaled 473 scrimmage yards. He’s now broken another of McCaffrey’s two-game team records, which McCaffrey set. Dowdle’s moment to shine arrived when Chuba Hubbard went down with a calf injury in Week 4. Her faith in him was seconded by his high school coach, Shane Laws, who remembered vividly how gifted Dowdle was at a young age. “He was one of the best players in the state, so instead of relying on anybody else to get him the ball we just snapped it to him,” Laws stated. This approach highlights the trust and confidence that coaches early on had in Dowdle’s abilities.
As a high school athlete, Dowdle broke a Western North Carolina record, scoring 63 total touchdowns. During his senior year, he rose to the occasion as quarterback when his coach needed someone dependable under center. Laws never wanted Dowdle to get the ball on every play. It’s easy to make Dowdle’s running style sound like a video game, with a violent running style on display with great agility and impressive spin moves to evade multiple defenders.
Bobby Bentley, who worked under Dowdle’s first three college-season coaching to Bobby Bentley at South Carolina. He noticed Dowdle’s gift from the jump. Bentley knew that Dowdle had the talent to compete at the next level and beyond. “He’s earned the right to help this team, and he will, and we’ll find a way to do that,” said offensive coordinator Dave Canales when discussing Dowdle’s integration into the team’s strategy.
Despite the odds stacked against him as an undrafted free agent, Dowdle has battled and fought to not only compete. His stunning performance streak should come as no surprise for those who have tracked his journey closely. “So I’m not shocked by any of this. None of this surprises any of us up here in the mountains,” said Laws.
Beyond his record-setting stats, Dowdle’s skill set on the floor has opened eyes to all, including fans and analysts. His natural instinct to break tackles and find seams has turned him into the Panthers most reliable asset. Laws noted, emphasizing the importance of Dowdle’s presence on the field.
Dowdle is enjoying a wave of momentum. He acknowledges the burden he faced as he fought to earn his place in the NFL. “This is his high school coach reading between the lines, because Rico didn’t come out and tell me this, that they didn’t put more effort into trying to find a way to re-sign him bothered him,” Laws mentioned, indicating that Dowdle’s journey has been shaped by the desire to prove doubters wrong.
