Dinwiddie’s mid-week release by the Charlotte Hornets comes only days before the NBA regular season was set to get underway. That was largely expected after the former Richmond star signed a one-year, $3.6 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets back in July. He only appeared in two preseason games for the franchise.
Dinwiddie’s brief stint in Charlotte marked the latest chapter in a career that has seen him play for multiple NBA franchises. Prior to his time with the Hornets, he was an invaluable starter for the Dallas Mavericks last year. Those contributions were major and transformative for the band. In those 30 games as a starter, Dinwiddie made quite the impression. He posted averages of 14.3 points and 6.2 assists, giving a massive jolt to the Mavericks’ offensive attack.
In the 2024-25 season, he appeared in 79 games. He averaged 11 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.6 rebounds, while playing just over 27 minutes per game. He was awesome, truly, as a 6th man. His contributions were especially invaluable on the Mavericks’ historic run to the 2022 Western Conference Finals.
Dinwiddie’s pro career has produced some notable performances with several different franchises. He’s suited up for the Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. He was instrumental in the Nets’ growth during his time there. In those 621 games, he averaged 13.0 points and 5.1 assists with 345 of those starts coming in the first five slots.
His tenure has been defined by the major trades he’s made. Dallas picked up Dinwiddie in the Kristaps Porzingis trade at last year’s trade deadline. More recently, they traded him back to the Nets for Kyrie Irving in a deal that received national condemnation.
Heading into his 12th NBA campaign, Dinwiddie’s combination of experience and skill is striking. It’s turned him into one of – if not the – most popular players during free agency. His early release from the Hornets underscores the competitive nature of team rosters as they finalize their lineups for the upcoming season.
